Coaches of the Season
At the end of each Sporting Rec League season, we ask parents to nominate a coach that made a positive impact on their players this season.
Each Sporting Rec League Coach of the Season will be honored at a select Sporting KC home game!

Here's what parents had to say about a few of our
Coaches of the Season
Josh Benigar
2nd Grade Girls
Central Bank Sporting Complex
"Coach Josh came in and showed our girls the fundamentals of soccer as well as the power of team work! He works individually showing the girls their strengths and how to work on things they aren't so great at.
He's positive and compassionate yet no nonsense and holds the girls up to higher expectations. He's the coach we've been waiting for!
The girls want to be better and enjoy coming to practice and playing their hearts out at the games. I can't think of a more deserving coach."
Tim Cottrell
2nd Grade Girls
Compass Minerals Sporting Fields
"Coach Tim has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to fostering not only athletic development but also personal growth and teamwork.
From the very first practice, Coach created an environment where every player felt valued, supported, and encouraged to try their best.
His approach goes far beyond drills and game strategy. He teaches the girls what it means to be a good teammate by cheering each other on, celebrating small victories, and showing kindness both on and off the field."
Vio Manac
Kindergarten Girls
Garmin Olathe Soccer Complex
"This is our 3rd season with Coach Vio, and we keep requesting him as our coach.
He’s great with the girls, has helped them improve on their skills and knowledge for the game. He knows the game well!
Coach Vio is always encouraging and supportive. Always taking the time to teach the girls as they play! He’s a wonderful coach!"
Hans Schmidt
3rd Grade Boys
Central Bank Sporting Complex
"Hans has been coaching the boys for several seasons now. He is able to find the exact balance between competition and fun that is represented by Sporting Rec League.
He has a deep passion to see his athletes grow, not only improving their skills but also their confidence. He leads by example- always staying calm and encouraging in any situation.
We’ve been lucky to have him coach our son for several years and we couldn’t think of a person more deserving."
Michael Koller
2nd Grade Boys
Compass Minerals Sporting Fields
"Mike has gone above and beyond for our team by taking so much time out of his busy life to coach our kids, patiently teaching them new skills, treating them with respect and kindness and helping them grow as teammates.
Not only did he focus on skills, he also focused on sportsmanship and accountability. He showed up early to every practice and game to set up and was always the last to leave. His communication with parents was consistent, detailed and helpful.
Mike has been the reason my son will continue to play soccer."
Taylor Wiley
Kindergarten Boys
Garmin Olathe Soccer Complex
"Coach Taylor made the game so fun for our team. He always had a positive attitude and provided structure to games and practices that emphasized having fun while learning.
Coach Taylor does a great job cheering each kid on and giving praise and encouragement. Our team had a fantastic season!"
Brian Harvey
4th/5th Grade Boys
Central Bank Sporting Complex
"Brian has done an amazing job of not only teaching skills and having fun, but also teaching teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect for coaches, teammates, refs, and opponents.
He has helped each player find and enhance their strengths while improving their overall game. He has also made sure the players are getting to play equally and in positions they want to play."
Timera Kakish
4th Grade Girls
Compass Minerals Sporting Fields
"Jake was incredible this season. He handled each child as an individual and was always patient, energetic, and very very communicative. He went out of his way to make the girls feel like they were a part of something special.
We are hoping that our daughter will have the opportunity to play for him again."
Adam Ellis
2nd Grade Girls
Garmin Olathe Soccer Complex
"Coach Adam is always positive with the boys whether they win or lose. He is always encouraging the boys, focuses on teamwork and individual development and meets the boys at their own skill level.
In addition to helping them learn the game and the field positions, he encourages them to be positive role models and good humans off the field, too."
